At Popcorn Kitchen, we are true believers in leaving the world in a better place than we found it. By funding climate action, we hope to have a positive impact within countries and communities that are intertwined with the food system that we depend on for our products. We believe that by restoring nature and improving livelihoods across the world, we can inspire hope in the face of climate change.

Here’s a closer look at one of the climate projects we’re proud to support:

Ceará Renewable Energy Project, Brazil

The creation of materials and the processing of waste all require some form of energy. To
truly reach Net Zero, the world must wean itself off of fossil fuels as the primary form of
energy supply, and transition to renewable sources. We have chosen to invest in the Ceará Renewable Energy Project in Brazil, to reduce emissions by a further 45 tonnes, providing an opportunity for accelerated decarbonisation in Brazil, while improving work opportunities and the quality of life for local communities.

Project Insights

This project tackles one of the major causes of deforestation in Brazil: illegal logging. It is located in the Caatinga, which occupies around 11% of the whole country territory. The Caatinga is one of the most threatened ecosystems on the planet. The project has switched the fuel used in local factories from illegal firewood to agricultural residues. This biomass would have otherwise been discarded as waste, so the fuel switch not only transforms residues into something useful, but also alleviates deforestation and reduces carbon emissions. It also improves the livelihoods of local communities through housing initiatives and the generation of income.
